How to Take the JFT-Basic
This guide explains how to apply for the JFT-Basic, create a Prometric ID, prepare for test day, check identification documents, and confirm your results.

Since August 2026, JFT-Basic assesses scores of 145–174 as A1, 175–199 as A2.1, and 200–250 as A2.2 (A2). Scores below 145 do not establish any of these levels. A1 is used before starting Employment for Skill Development and for admission to Japanese language institutions; A2.1 is mainly used for transfers at the worker’s initiative under that program; A2.2 (A2) is used for SSW(i). Check additional sector requirements, any prescribed course route, the application type and effective dates separately.
JFT-Basic uses CBT and is offered several times each month at 11 locations in Japan. Results appear on screen immediately after the test, and the official assessment notification is available to view and print through the registration website within five business days. JLPT is held twice a year in Japan, with some overseas locations offering it once a year. Distinguish the online result date from the date when submission-ready result documents are available. ISA’s 5 October notice states that applications for the December 2026 JLPT closed for all levels before the announced deadline. Work backwards from the residence expiry and planned employment date: confirm the required level, find an official test and available seat, reserve, obtain the official result, then apply.
For Student applications involving admission to a Japanese language institution, A1-equivalent or higher ability must be checked using a test certificate or an interview; a history of 150 or more study hours alone is insufficient. This applies to COE applications for students entering from October 2026 and change-of-status or extension applications filed from 1 July 2026. Japanese-language preparatory courses (bekka) are also covered. Applicants holding nationality of a country or region listed by ISA who graduated from a foreign higher education institution and submit graduation evidence are exempt from this particular handling. This is not a universal admission rule for all universities or vocational schools, and it does not make JFT-Basic compulsory for everyone. Keep it separate from the requirements for a current student changing to SSW.
JFT-Basic and JLPT are different assessments; A1 is not completely identical to N5, nor A2.2 to N4. A JFT-Basic score of 200 or higher obtained before August 2026 remains usable as A2.2 (A2) evidence, but older scores below 200 must not be reclassified as A1 or A2.1. 1. What is the JFT-Basic?
The Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese, or JFT-Basic, is a Japanese language test for foreign nationals who are mainly preparing to work in Japan. It measures whether the test taker can communicate in Japanese in everyday life situations.
JFT-Basic can be used as Japanese language evidence for Specified Skilled Worker (i). Like JLPT N4, it can be an important Japanese test for people preparing to work in Japan. However, JFT-Basic focuses more directly on daily-life and work-related communication and is conducted as a CBT test.
2. Test format
JFT-Basic is conducted through Computer-Based Testing, or CBT. At the test center, questions are displayed on a computer screen, and test takers answer on the computer. For listening questions, audio is played through headphones.

According to the official information, the test has approximately 50 questions and the test time is 60 minutes.
3. Passing score and result confirmation
Since August 2026, JFT-Basic assesses scores of 145–174 as A1, 175–199 as A2.1, and 200–250 as A2.2 (A2). Scores below 145 do not establish any of these levels. Within five business days after taking the test, the official notification of assessment results can be viewed and printed from the registration website. If you plan to use the result for a Specified Skilled Worker application, check how to view, print, and submit the official notification.
4. What to check before registration
Before reserving the JFT-Basic, check the following items. It is especially important that your identification document and your Prometric ID registration information match.

5. Creating a Prometric ID and making a reservation
JFT-Basic reservations are made through Prometric’s registration website. First, create a Prometric ID. Then choose your test country or area, test date, test center, and start time, confirm the payment method, and complete the reservation.

6. Main countries where the JFT-Basic is currently available
Prometric’s JFT-Basic page lists the following countries as test countries. However, test countries, test centers, reservation periods, and payment methods may change.

7. Test day process
On the test day, arriving on time is very important. Prometric information states that admission starts 45 minutes before the test, and test takers must arrive at the test center no later than 30 minutes before the test start time.

8. Identity document cautions
Identity documents directly affect whether you can take the test. Copies or smartphone screen images are not accepted. The document must be original, valid, and clear enough to identify you.

9. Reservation changes and retake rules
You cannot change your reservation after the reservation deadline. Cancellation is not available, and the test fee may not be refunded if you are absent, late, or unable to take the test because of insufficient identity documents.
For retakes, you cannot take the same test again for 45 days from the day after the test date. You may retake if your total score is 199 or below, subject to the waiting period. Once you have scored 200 or higher, you cannot retake. An A1 or A2.1 assessment alone does not prevent a retake.
10. JFT-Basic and the Specified Skilled Worker visa
JFT-Basic is an important Japanese language test for Specified Skilled Worker (i). However, passing the JFT-Basic alone does not guarantee approval for the Specified Skilled Worker visa.

11. Should you take JFT-Basic or JLPT N4?
Many people preparing for Specified Skilled Worker wonder whether they should take JFT-Basic or JLPT N4. The better option depends on the country where you can take the test, test schedule, test format, and timing of your planned application.

Preparing for Specified Skilled Worker?
JFT-Basic and JLPT N4 can be important Japanese language tests for Specified Skilled Worker preparation. However, SSW eligibility does not depend only on Japanese ability.
