JFT-Basic is a Japanese language test used to assess whether foreign nationals can communicate in Japanese in everyday situations while living and working in Japan. It is also one of the Japanese language tests used for Specified Skilled Worker (i).
This page provides a free 20-question beginner mini mock test created independently by Tommy’s Legal Service. It is intended for people who have started studying for JFT-Basic or who want to review basic Japanese used in daily life and at work.
This mini mock test consists of original self-check practice questions created independently by Tommy’s Legal Service.
It is not an official JFT-Basic test and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Japan Foundation, official JFT-Basic organizations, Prometric or any other official test provider. It does not reproduce official JFT-Basic questions, audio or test format.
The result of this mini test cannot be used as:
- an official JFT-Basic pass or fail result;
- official evidence of A1, A2.1 or A2.2 proficiency;
- evidence of the Japanese language requirement for Specified Skilled Worker (i);
- grounds for exemption from a 100-hour Japanese course under the Employment for Skill Development Program; or
- supporting evidence for an immigration or Employment for Skill Development Plan application.
This mini mock test includes Script and Vocabulary, Conversation and Expression, Reading Comprehension, daily-life situations and Japanese listening questions. It does not reproduce the number of questions, scoring method, difficulty or format of the official test.

Reference questions from the A1 learning stage to the early A2 learning stage
This mini mock test mainly covers basic vocabulary, short conversations, simple notices and basic listening used in everyday and workplace situations.
Based on the content of the questions, the approximate learning range is from the basic A1 learning stage to the early A2 learning stage. This is not an official proficiency assessment under the Japanese Language Education Framework.
To obtain an official A1, A2.1 or A2.2 assessment, you must take an official test accepted under the relevant immigration system.

JFT-Basic is scheduled to introduce A1, A2.1 and A2.2 assessment categories in connection with the Employment for Skill Development Program.
Please check the latest information published by the Japan Foundation and the Immigration Services Agency of Japan regarding score ranges, assessment categories and how each result may be used.
Employment for Skill Development and JFT-Basic
Under Japan’s Employment for Skill Development Program, Japanese language proficiency may be checked before work begins, during the employment and training period, and when moving to Specified Skilled Worker (i).
How A1, A2.1 and A2.2 results are used depends on the latest laws, ministerial ordinances, field-specific operational policies, operational guidelines and official notices issued by the Immigration Services Agency.
This mini mock test may be used as a simple self-check by a foreign national planning to enter the Employment for Skill Development Program.
The score from this mini mock test cannot be used as official evidence of A1, A2.1 or A2.2 proficiency.
A high score on this mini mock test does not exempt a person from any Japanese language course required before employment or during the Employment for Skill Development period.

This is a practice test for identifying strengths and weaknesses in basic Japanese. It does not assess an official language level or predict an official test result.

Considering Employment for Skill Development or Specified Skilled Worker?
JFT-Basic and JLPT N4 are important Japanese language tests. However, immigration procedures for Employment for Skill Development or Specified Skilled Worker (i) also involve skills tests, employment contracts, accepting organization requirements, supervision or support systems, Japanese language education plans and application documents.
Tommy’s Legal Service provides consultations concerning eligibility, Japanese test documents, whether an official Japanese course may be required, consistency between the Japanese education arrangements and the Employment for Skill Development Plan, and immigration applications.
We do not provide Japanese language instruction or issue official proficiency assessments. Japanese courses must be provided by an educational institution or teacher that satisfies the applicable statutory requirements.
