What is Extension of Period of Stay?

Extension of Period of Stay is an application for foreign nationals who wish to continue staying in Japan beyond the currently granted period of stay without changing their current status of residence.

In general, if your granted period of stay is six months or longer, you may apply from around three months before the expiration date. In special circumstances, such as hospitalization or a long business trip, an earlier application may be accepted.

Four key points to review before applying

A status renewal application should be prepared by checking not only the application form but also the consistency of your current situation and supporting documents.

1.Applicant’s situation We review whether your activities match your current status of residence, including income, address, family situation, taxes, and social insurance.
2.Employer or affiliated organization For work-related statuses, job duties, employment terms, business activities, and company stability are important.
3.Consistency of documents Application forms, employment contracts, tax certificates, resident records, company documents, and reason statements must be consistent.
4.Screening risks Special care may be required after a job change, income decrease, change in family support, company financial issues, or an additional document request.

FAQ

When can I apply for renewal?

In general, if your granted period of stay is six months or longer, you may apply from around three months before the expiration date. Special circumstances may allow an earlier application.

Can I consult you even if my expiration date is very close?

Depending on the situation, we may still be able to help. However, collecting documents from employers or public offices can take time, so early consultation is recommended.

Is the first renewal after changing jobs risky?

It requires careful review. If your employer or job duties have changed since the previous application, we need to confirm whether your current work matches your status of residence.

Will tax or social insurance issues affect the application?

It depends on the individual situation. If there are unpaid amounts or delays, the reason, current payment status, and supporting documents should be organized carefully.

Can an administrative scrivener submit the application for me?

A registered immigration application intermediary administrative scrivener may handle the filing in appropriate cases. Depending on the case, the applicant may still need to respond personally.
